Service BOM (SBOM)

1. Definitions and Use Cases

Service BOM, also called SBOM (Service Bill of Materials), consolidates material items used during service activities. It is intended solely as a maintenance reference and must not be used to retrieve equipment configuration information.

SBOM helps service centers and technicians avoid cumbersome or inconvenient maintenance-BOM lookups. It also assists technicians and spare-parts administrators in identifying parts required for repairs, making it easier to submit spare-parts requests to headquarters in a timely manner.

2. Prerequisites to Enable Service BOM

Service BOM is an advanced feature within the Spare Parts Management module and requires the following conditions:

  1. Spare Parts Management must be set to Advanced Mode and the new spare-parts consumption workflow must be in use. Simple Mode or Standard Mode for spare parts cannot enable Service BOM.
  2. CPQ must be enabled before Service BOM can be enabled.

Both conditions are mandatory.

3. How to Enable Service BOM

After meeting the prerequisites, you will see a Service BOM submenu under Spare Parts Management. Enter that submenu to enable Service BOM.

Once Service BOM is enabled, you cannot disable it.

4. Creating a New Service BOM

  • The Service BOM entry is available under the Spare Parts Management menu.
  • The Service BOM list page displays only BOM records where BOM Type = Configuration BOM and BOM Purpose = Service BOM.

  • When creating a BOM via the Service BOM entry: BOM Type is fixed to Configuration BOM and cannot be changed; BOM Purpose is fixed to Service BOM and cannot be changed.
  • When saving a BOM from any entry point: if BOM Purpose is Service BOM, BOM Type must be Configuration BOM. Otherwise, the system will not allow saving.

5. Picking Materials from Service BOM

When creating a Material Requisition Order, you can add items from Service BOM. Click “Add from Service BOM”:

1) If no Work Order is specified, the Service BOM dialog shows all BOMs with BOM Type = Configuration BOM and BOM Purpose = Service BOM.

2) If a Work Order is specified, the system matches Service BOMs according to the Work Order’s associations in this sequence: multiple devices -> single device -> Product.

6. Submitting Spare-Parts Requests Based on Service BOM

When creating a Spare Parts Request, you can add items from Service BOM.

7. Selecting New Parts for Spare-Parts Consumption Based on Service BOM

picture coming soon:

When creating a Spare Parts Consumption record, after selecting the New Part consumption warehouse, click “Add from Service BOM”:

  • The system matches Service BOMs according to the Work Order’s associations in this sequence: multiple devices -> single device -> Product. The device’s associated Product must equal the BOM’s parent Product name, and the BOM must have BOM Type = Configuration BOM and BOM Purpose = Service BOM.

  • You can select multiple products from multiple Service BOMs at once. After selecting products and confirming:

    • The system searches the New Part consumption warehouse for inventory records whose Available Quantity > 0 that match the selected products and fills the related New Part fields in the Spare Parts Consumption detail lines.

8. Selecting Parts via Exploded View Mode

Under Spare Parts Management -> Service BOM, you can access the product exploded-view option. You must first purchase the “OCR Text Recognition Pack — General Recognition (High-Precision Positioning)” to enable exploded-view functionality.

picture coming soon:

After enabling exploded-view, go to a Service BOM detail and click “Configure Exploded View” in the upper-right to open the exploded-view configuration page.

On the exploded-view configuration page, provided you have sufficient OCR recognition credits, the system will automatically detect part numbers from the exploded diagram. Select the corresponding part numbers in the left-side Service BOM list’s “Drawing Number” field to complete the mapping.

After mapping an exploded view to a Service BOM, when creating Spare Parts Requests or other documents and adding parts from Service BOM, you can choose parts using the exploded-view interface:

  • Selecting a part on the exploded view automatically checks the corresponding product in the Service BOM details on the right.
  • Selecting a product in the Service BOM details on the right highlights the corresponding part in the exploded view on the left.
