Close an opportunity and record the result


Overview

When a project result is clear, move the Opportunity to Closed Won, Closed Lost, or Invalid. Accurate Order Closed information keeps the sales pipeline reliable and supports win-loss analysis.

Before you begin

Before you begin - You need permission to edit and perform Stage Advancement on the target Opportunity. - Confirm the actual project result. - The end stage can require fields, Stage Tasks, Entry Criteria, or Approval.

Close the Opportunity

  1. Open the target Opportunity details page.
  2. In the Stage Advancement section, select Closed Won, Closed Lost, Invalid, or another applicable end stage.
  3. Enter the Order Closed date, amount, reason, summary, and other required information.
  4. If Approval starts, submit the request and wait for the Approval Decision.
  5. Verify the information and confirm the stage change.
Your organization can customize end-stage names and fields. Follow the labels and instructions on the current page.

Record a Closed Won result

For a Closed Won Opportunity, record:
  • The actual close date and transaction amount.
  • The configured Closed Won reason.
  • A summary that supports delivery, renewal, or reuse of successful practices (Copy Successful).
Required fields depend on the end stage and Opportunity object configuration.

Record a Closed Lost or Invalid result

For a Closed Lost or Invalid Opportunity, record:
  • The actual close date.
  • The configured Closed Lost or Invalid reason.
  • Important context and whether the Account requires future nurturing.
If competition fields are available, complete them with verified information. Do not add competition data when the page does not require it.

Handle progression restrictions

Your administrator controls stage skipping, Approval, and post-submission editing. If the system blocks closure, complete the required task or field, or ask an administrator to check the process.

Verify the result

  • The Opportunity shows the correct end stage and result.
  • The close date, amount, and reason match the actual business result.
  • Approval and Stage Tasks are completed according to your organization’s rules.
  • Related analysis can use the Opportunity result.
