Sales BOM
Overview
By configuring Sales BOM completely, the business can solidify complex product structures, option constraints, and quote logic inside the system, so sales can complete configuration faster and more reliably on the front end.
Before you begin
[!IMPORTANT] - Permissions required: You must have system administrator or CPQ back-office configuration permissions. - Prerequisites: The company has purchased and enabled the related CPQ capabilities. - Dependencies: If you need complex quantity relationships or advanced constraints, evaluate quote-engine capability at the same time.
Step 1: Enable CPQ
The core entry path is:
Business Rule Management > Sales-in-Progress Management Configuration > CPQ ConfigurationThe first action here is to enable the CPQ switch. Once enabled, the switch cannot be turned off. This is the master switch of Sales BOM capability, so confirm that the business truly needs to enter complex product configuration before enabling it.

The page also shows that enabling CPQ affects hierarchical-field display on quote and order objects, as well as how printed templates render the result. It is not just a simple feature button. It affects the global behavior of multiple transaction objects.
Step 2: Enable Standard BOM if needed
If the business needs not only configuration BOM but also standard BOM for fixed structures that support routine production and inventory management, continue by enabling the
Standard BOM switch. After that, the BOM Type field in product combinations will support the Standard BOM option.
Step 3: Configure the product selection mode
The front-end experience of Sales BOM is not unique. Administrators must decide which mode best fits the business:
- Default mode
- Item-selection ordering
- Attribute-based ordering
This setting directly affects how sales performs configuration inside quotes and orders.
Because all three modes are real selectable options in the interface, confirm the preferred usage pattern with the sales team before switching, otherwise the change in front-end experience will directly affect sales efficiency.

Step 4: Build product combinations
Product combinations are the core object of Sales BOM. During configuration, confirm at least:
- Which product is the parent product
- Whether the structure uses Configuration BOM or Standard BOM
- Whether the structure is Sales BOM or Service BOM
- What the current version number is
If the business needs to reuse an existing structure, it can also form a reused BOM by using a combination product as a child item.
Step 5: Configure groups, constraints, and advanced formulas
Simply attaching child items is not enough. Administrators also need to define:
- Whether a group is single-select or multi-select
- Whether the group is mandatory
- Minimum and maximum quantities of child items
- Constraint relationships between products
- Constraint relationships at the attribute level
- Advanced formulas for quantity linkage
Advanced formulas are related to the quote engine, so if the business needs complex quantity relationships, keep the quote-engine switch in scope as well.
Pre-launch checklist
Before rolling Sales BOM out to the sales team, confirm:
- The CPQ, Standard BOM, and configuration-mode switches are finalized for the business scenario
- Product combinations, group limits, and constraints have been validated once on the front end
- Printing, downstream order handling, and later ERP integration can all recognize the current hierarchical structure
Result after configuration
After these steps are complete, the business should have:
- Combination structures that can be called in quotes, orders, and similar objects
- A stable rule framework that front-end configuration modes can consume reliably
- Structural results that can continue into ERP or later delivery systems
