Configure layout rules
Layout rules dynamically show, hide, require, or lock fields when users manually create, edit, or View Details.
Overview
Layout rules apply only to manual creation, editing, and details pages. They do not apply by default to bulk import, OpenAPI, workflow field changes, or bulk updates.
Before you begin
- Configure the default layout.
- Identify the controlling field.
- Define each controlled field’s behavior and ensure it is visible in the layout.
Rule Type and procedure
Go to Standard Object / Custom Object Management > Layout Rules, and click Create.
Enter the rule’s Basic Info before configuring conditions.
1. Field control rule
This rule changes other fields based on a controlling field.
Step 1: Configure the field and conditions
- Supported Field Type values include picklist, Single-Line Text, Multi-Line Text, multi-select, number, amount, date, time, Date Time, mobile, email, URL, Boolean, percentage, and Region Location.
- Condition groups use OR. Conditions within one group use AND.
Step 2: Configure actions
Each rule supports up to 20 action groups:
- Show Field: The field is hidden by default and appears when conditions match.
- Set Required Field: Makes an optional field required.
- Set Read-Only Field: Makes a controlled field read-only.
[!IMPORTANT] Controlled fields must be optional and editable in the layout. The system excludes system fields, owner fields, Life Status, Lock Status, Record Type, Master-Detail Relationship, payment and Check-In components, auto-number fields, Formula, Roll-Up Summary, and fields with a parent relationship.
2. Page control rule
A page control rule uses the page type instead of a controlling field.
- On a create page, it can only hide fields.
- On an edit page, it can hide fields or make them read-only.
- Detail objects do not support page control rules.
- The rule requires an enabled Form Page layout.
Manage layout rules
- Search by Rule Name or filter by layout.
- Enable, disable, delete, or copy rules.
- You can delete only a disabled rule.
- If the controlling field is disabled or deleted, the Edit button is unavailable.
