Configure enterprise and employee languages

Set the enterprise default and available languages before maintaining employee languages.

Before you begin

The enterprise must have the Multiple Languages product enabled. The management role requires the Language Settings management permission; the built-in System Administrator role already has it. Administrators maintain the enterprise default and employee languages. Employees can also select a personal language from the languages enabled for the enterprise.

Set the enterprise default language

  1. Sign in as an administrator and go to Setup > Enterprise Settings > Enterprise Information Settings.
  2. Find Default Language and select the language employees use when they first access the system.
  3. Save the setting.
Set the enterprise default language
The enterprise default applies when an employee has not selected a language. Changing the enterprise default does not automatically change an employee’s saved personal language.

Maintain an employee’s language

An administrator can specify the language an employee uses after sign-in when creating or maintaining the employee:
  1. Go to Setup > Organization Structure Management > Departments and Employees.
  2. Create an employee or open the target employee for editing.
  3. Select the target language in the language field and save.
Set an employee language
Employees can also change their own language in Personal Settings. Available choices depend on the languages enabled for the enterprise.

Validate the result

Sign in again or refresh the page as an employee. Confirm that built-in UI text and custom object and field names appear in the target language. If only some custom content still displays its default value, check whether the translation values in Translation Workbench or Object Name Settings have been synchronized.
