Translate object and field names

Before you begin

• The enterprise has the Multiple Languages product enabled.
• Your account has the Language Settings management permission and can access Setup > Object Management > Object Name Settings. You also need permission to manage the target objects and fields.
• You have identified the target language. You can maintain display names for built-in and custom objects and fields.

Maintain names individually

1. Go to Setup > Object Management > Object Name Settings.
2. Select the target language and find the object to translate.
3. Expand the object and enter target-language values for the object or field names.
4. Save the changes.
5. Refresh the interface as an employee using the target language. Check names in the object entry point, list, detail, create, and edit pages.

Export and import in bulk

1. Select Export and choose one target language.
2. Select the objects to export, then select All Untranslated Terms or All Terms.
3. Download the file and edit only the target-language values.
4. Return to Object Name Settings and select Import.
5. Select the language that matches the file, upload the file, and run the import.
6. Review success and failure counts. Correct failed rows and import them again.

Default and fallback rules

• You can change the system-provided translations for built-in objects and fields. If a target-language value is cleared, the system falls back to the description value, or Default.
• When a custom object is created, the system writes its name to Default and initializes each language from that description. A later change to one language does not update Default.
• If the target-language value of a custom object or field is empty, the system displays the original Default value.

[!NOTE] This setting changes display names for objects and fields. It does not translate data such as product or account names in business records. Use Data Translation Settings for business records.

Validate and troubleshoot

1. As an employee using the target language, check the object entry point, list headers, detail page, and create and edit pages.
2. If an old name remains, confirm that you edited the target-language value instead of Default, then refresh or sign in again.
3. If import fails, download a current template and verify that the import language matches the file and that identifiers and columns were not changed.
4. If an object or field is missing, confirm that it is supported here and that your account can access the object. Do not switch to Translation Workbench or business-data translation for this issue.
5. If text appears even though the target-language value is empty, check the Default fallback rule. A fallback value does not mean that the language has been translated.
