Edit quote details
Overview
The value of editing quote details is that sales can continue to revise products, quantities, and pricing during multiple rounds of communication while keeping the document traceable and ready for later conversion.
The system is designed to support multiple rounds of negotiation and repeated revisions during the quote process. The key question is not whether the document can be changed, but under what conditions it can be changed and who is allowed to change it.
Before you begin
[!IMPORTANT] - Permissions required: You need permission to edit quote details and, in most cases, read/write access. - Prerequisites: The quote detail is in a normal and unlocked state. - Dependencies: If the quote is affected by price-book rules or product-configuration logic, review the overall result again after any adjustment.
Step 1: Confirm status and permissions
The quote detail must be both Normal and Unlocked. If either condition is not met, you should not continue editing the line item.
Both conditions matter:
Normaldetermines whether the document is still in a workable lifecycle stateUnlockeddetermines whether changes are still allowed
Step 2: Open the quote detail
The users who can perform this action are not limited to the owner. The following roles may also participate if the permission boundary allows it:
- Owner
- Owner’s manager
- Related team members with read/write permission
- Managers of related team members
- Shared users with read/write permission
This means quote line-item editing is fundamentally collaborative rather than private to a single user.
If a user can see the quote but cannot enter edit mode, the first things to check are usually:
- Whether the user has
read/writepermission instead of read-only access - Whether the user belongs to the owner, manager, related team, or sharing scope
Two typical entry points are:
- Open Quote Details from the Quote Detail page
- Open the detail page directly from the Quote Detail object
If the company uses different document-maintenance habits, choose the entry point that better matches its workflow.
The first entry is better when reviewing and adjusting the full quote, while the second is better when focusing on one line item for a quick change.
Step 3: Adjust the line item and review the overall result
- Open the quote detail page or the quote line-item detail page.
- Confirm that the current state is normal and unlocked.
- Open the edit action and adjust the product, quantity, or pricing-related fields as needed.
- After saving, return to the overall document view and review the result.
If line-item changes affect the overall price expression, it is best to return to the quote header page after saving and review the whole quote again.
Result check
After the line-item edit is complete, review the following carefully:
- Whether the quote still matches the customer’s current needs
- Whether it still conforms to the price-book or product-configuration rules
- Whether it affects the later order-conversion result
Also pay extra attention to:
- Whether the adjusted line items are still suitable for printing or emailing to the customer
- Whether the current line items have reached a close-ready version if the next step is order conversion
If the quote process is long, it is recommended to align each major adjustment with a customer confirmation milestone, so the document version and the communication version do not drift apart.
