Enable the item feature
Enable the item object to maintain shared product information and support nonvariant and variant item management.
When to use this feature
Enable the item feature when the enterprise needs to maintain shared item names, categories, units, and variants, or when one item must map to multiple variant products.
Before you start
[!IMPORTANT] - Permissions: You have system configuration permissions. - Business decision: You have confirmed that the enterprise needs nonvariant or variant item management. - Impact: Enabling the feature changes how users create products and maintain shared information.
Steps
- Go to Setup > Item/Product Configuration > Item Configuration, and enable the item feature.
- Open the new page in the Products module. Check that it shows Has Variants and item relationship settings.
- Use Four configuration modes for items and multiple units to check the current mode and product creation result.

Configuration results
- The system adds the item object.
- A nonvariant item maps to one product.
- A variant item can map to multiple products.
- Each variant product maps to one variant combination.
- When you create a variant product, the system generates its name from the item name and variant values. Product maintainers can edit the name as needed.
- The item maintains shared information such as product category and unit, and synchronizes it to related products.
[!WARNING] After you enable the item feature, you cannot edit centrally maintained shared information separately on the product page. All products under a variant item relate to the same item and are distinguished by variant combinations.
